CASE STUDY: Design & Build an IT Infrastructure for a New Acute Care Facility

Client’s Challenge

Design and build an IT infrastructure that supports a brand new full-service, 49 bed, general acute care facility in Southern Arizona. The infrastructure needed to support over 250 employees, 120 volunteers, and numerous contracted providers. Provide IT leadership and project management from groundbreaking through the hospital’s first few months of operation. Ensure that a highly competent and reliable IT staff is hired to assist in implementation and to carry on operations post-go-live. 

The IT infrastructure project included complete data center design, cabling infrastructure, local, Wi-Fi, and wide-area networks, phone and paging system, physical and virtual servers, storage area network (SAN), desktops, PAC’s solution, EHR selection and implementation, physical and cyber security, Microsoft environment and email solution, and Nurse Call system. 

 

Our Solution

  • Worked with key owners and construction team to gain an understanding of overall building design and project timeline (approximately 15 months).
  • Began RFP process for electronic health record (EHR) vendor selection and procurement.
  • Established vendor contact list for telecommunications into facility while determining timeline for connectivity.
  • Established IT stakeholder meetings with key owners and department leaders to gain system and application requirements.
  • Began design of IT infrastructure to support hospital hardware and software requirements for staff throughout hospital.
  • Created copper and fiber cabling specs, established vendor list, and received multiple bids from vendors. Assisted in final selection of cabling vendor. Began design of cabling infrastructure, server room layout, and wall outlet locations throughout facility.
  • Created specs for data center electrical requirements, cooling, system hardware, fire suppression, and security access control. Finalized vendors and purchased systems.
  • Designed desktop architecture to support business and clinical applications and purchased hardware.
  • Determined staffing needs for overall implementation and to support ongoing IT operations. Determined implementation staffing needs (temporary staff for project implementation). Hired staff.
  • Provided IT project management services from groundbreaking during construction throughout IT implementation and go-live at hospital.
  • Successfully went live with all IT services on time and within budget. IT staff continued to support the hospital’s efforts post-go-live.
