Living Like a Leader Series: Katie Lynch

July 14, 2020

“Being a great leader is all about having a genuine willingness and a true commitment to lead others to achieve a common vision and goals through positive influence. No leader can ever achieve anything great or long-lasting all alone. Teamwork goes hand in hand with leadership. Leadership is about people-and for people.”

Katie was blessed to have the opportunity to start as a leader with John Lynch & Associates in 2012. Knowing that John always wanted to own his own company, Katie knew that it was only a matter of time before he would switch gears and go for it. John began consulting for a company in Northern Arizona and as his successes became more evident, the opportunity to go out on his own came to the forefront. Through that process, the chance to bring Katie and her skill set in for the client began to take shape. She eventually jumped in and together they started to build John Lynch & Associates. Katie has never looked back.

Before launching John Lynch & Associates, Katie was fully supportive of John starting a company but was also content where she was in her corporate role. Having worked in various systems as an analyst, Healthcare Management and Human Resources, Katie’s knowledge was highly sought after. Never did she imagine that the doors would be opened for both her and John to jump into this new company together. Clearly, God had different plans as they are well into their 8th year of business.

In addition to her duties as Chief Operating Officer, HR Director and an Executive Consultant, Katie is mom to Tyler, her 12 year old son. She absolutely adores him and is often found cheering him on on the soccer field. Katie truly loves being a #boymom.

After being asked to complete the Living Like a Leader series, Katie shares a little insight into her days here with us.

Question: What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

I wake up early and like to start my day with the Bible app ~ reading my Bible plans and spending the first few moments of my day with God. After that, I will check emails and make mental note of anything else that needs to be or has been added to my day.

Q: What do you do in the mornings before work?

I love to get my workout done in the morning if I can. Once everyone is up and going and my son gets to school, works starts and the day is off and running. However during these last few months it was definitely a slightly different routine. Remote learning prep became a part of my mornings too! That was interesting!

Q: What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at work?

Coffee & Planning!!! Two of my favorite things! With my coffee in hand, I love to plan my day ~ I look at what I need to accomplish, what I would like to accomplish and then prioritize. I love to make lists of what I strive to complete for the day.

Q: Is there anything that makes your physical office setup unique?

When I am not onsite at a client’s location, I work from home. The comfort of being at home and truly making my office space mine definitely makes it unique. The challenges that many have faced more recently are something I was able to adjust to several years ago. Setting aside space that is designated only for work has definitely help to separate that work/home life balance.

Q: What kind of work do you like to get done before lunch?

Administrative tasks, client specific tasks and team touch points. I love to check in with my team, ensure they have what is needed to be successful for the day or week and ensure my clients are taken care of! Happy employees make happy clients! and happy clients make me happy! Prioritizing those people & items makes me feel accomplished right from the start of the day and gives me the afternoons to focus on whatever comes my way.

Q: How much of your time is spent with direct reports?

When my team is in the office I love to connect and work on things together. We compliment each other so well and truly implement the idea of iron sharpens iron. We also have had weeks that we don’t physically see each other much due to client’s needs. Having tools like Microsoft Teams where we can connect at any moment definitely helps!

Q: How do you think your routine differs from that of other healthcare executives?

My routine is probably more integrated with my home life than most healthcare executives. My husband and I own our company and we work primarily at home. There are times when it may seem more relaxed compared to other executives but is probably a little crazier in that work never really ends.

Q: What is the hardest part of your day?

I think it depends on the day….

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your day?

Watching growth moments with our team! I love to see how far we have all come and love celebrating in their successes. Equally as rewarding are those moments when clients feel the value of the services we provide! I get so invested in our clients success and love to see everything come together.

Q: What’s the last thing you do before leaving the office?

Clean up my desk.

Q: Do you work at home?

YES!

Q: How do you unwind at the end of the day or on weekends?

I love just being with my family! We spend most weekends together. We love sports and are usually busy on a soccer field somewhere or at a flag football game. We also have an amazing church and love to spend our Saturday nights or Sunday mornings there. Kids running around, friends hanging out, true connections ~ it’s definitely one of my favorite things!

Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement at John Lynch & Associates so far?

We are in our 8th year of business. I am confident that we continue to be successful because of the amazing relationships we create with our clients and the quality of work we deliver. This is evident in the incredible team we have built, the continued referrals from our existing clients and the trust shown with new clients.
